Negeri Sembilan Wind of Change-Gracias Tok Mat

Negri exco gets new look, 2-year term limit
By SARBAN SINGH
KUALA PILAH: Nine new faces were appointed to the Negri Sembilan state executive council Monday with Umno holding eight of the 10 positions, and MCA and MIC holding one each.
The excos, who took their oath of secrecy and loyalty before the Yang DiPertuan Besar Tuanku Ja’afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman at Istana Besar Sri Menanti here, would also for the first time serve for a term of two years.
The only exco retained was Senaling assemblyman Datuk Ismail Lasim, who previously held the Works and Entrepreneur Development portfolio.
The new faces were Datuk Yunus Rahmat (Klawang), Datuk Hasim Rusdi (Labu), Mohamad Razi Kail (Juasseh), Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (Serting), Abd Samad Ibrahim (Seri Menanti), Ismail Taib (Linggi), Zainab Nasir (Gemas), Siow Shen Tin (Chennah) and V.S.Mogan (Jeram Padang).
All except Ismail Taib and Mohd Razi Kail are first term assemblymen.
(Four of the 10 excos in the previous administration did not contest in the general election; three failed to defend their seats while one moved on to a parliamentary seat).
Another former exco Datuk Razak Mansor is likely to be appointed Speaker.
Speaking to reporters later, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said he had decided to limit the excos' term to two years as he did not want them to be complacent.
“This is a reminder that you must work harder if you are appointed to the exco. You are not here to relax or to see other people do your work,” he said, adding that the excos would have to take oath for another two-year term when the present one expired.
Mohamad said he was also left with no choice but to appoint eight Umno assemblymen to the exco as the other Barisan Nasional component parties did not do well in the election.
Traditionally, Umno held six positions followed by MCA (two) and MIC and Gerakan (one each).
In the March 8 general election, the MCA and MIC won only one state seat each, while both the Gerakan candidates lost.
