Celcom: Tie-up with Umno will boost postpaid business
By Goh Thean Eu

CELCOM (Malaysia) Bhd is now a step closer to provide a mobile community postpaid package and customised content services to the country's largest political organisation, the United Malaysia National Organisation (Umno), which will help boost its postpaid business.
Umno, via K-Amal Technologies Sdn Bhd, and Celcom Mobile Sdn Bhd, a unit of Celcom, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Through the partnership, Umno members, over 3.2 million of them, can get access to customised content, as well as competitive call rates, when they sign up for the Umno Mobile Community (UMC) postpaid package.
The partnership would also signal a positive change of the way Umno delivers its information.
Prior to the partnership, the party's messages and information are mainly sent via conventional methods like facsimile, said its Secretary General Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad. With this collaboration, messages to its over 3.2 million members can be sent via SMS.
"It is high time to change the way we communicate internally. By partnering Celcom, it is anticipated that the line of disseminating information will be more effective," said Umno Treasurer Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi.
While the partnership would benefit Umno members, in terms of customised contents and call rates, the collaboration would give Celcom the opportunity to expand its postpaid customer base.
"The plan was specially designed for Umno Mobile Community, as well as to boost Celcom's postpaid segment," said Celcom chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly.
He said that Celcom, a unit of Telekom Malaysia Bhd, hopes to sign up more mobile community postpaid packages, as it is currently going after other organisations and societies.
Shazalli added that Celcom, over the past two months, has been aggressively doing things to beef up its postpaid segment.
In June, the firm launched its new postpaid enterprise package via tie-up with Vodafone. Early this week, the company launched its customer service re-branding initiative.
As of June 30, Celcom has 1.14 million postpaid customers, with each postpaid user spending an average of RM117 a month on phone calls.
Also present at the signing ceremony were K-Amal executive director Zafarul Akbar Jassim, K-Amal director of international operations Abdul Jaliludin Jamalludin, Celcom senior vice president Tuan Syed Md Najib Syed Md Noor and Celcom general manager Ahmad Taufik Omar
